Goa Police Makes A Big Breakthrough In Sonali Phogat Murder Case

PANAJI: The Goa Police team probing the murder of Sonali Phogat seems to have made a big breakthrough in the investigation, which will ultimately lead to the motive for the murder. In any murder investigation, the “motive” is an important legal component and the investigating agency has to mention the motive with adequate and sufficient evidence that could stand legal scrutiny and cross-examination in court by the lawyers for the accused when the trail begins. The cops were not willing to share confidential information and only said, “We have confiscated a passport, Aadhaar card, jewellery, some cash etc., from Sonali’s PA Sudhir Sangwan’s flat. The probe is still on and we cannot share any information related to the case,” said Theron D’Costa, Goa police inspector who is leading the probe.

However, sources said the Goa police may have zeroed on the motive, which is most likely to be her property and wealth. However, the police will not officially reveal the motive, unless all the medical and forensic reports of the viscera analysis, chemical tests and others are out.

Another angle to the death of Sonali Phogat could be that the duo wanted to enjoy the high of consuming drugs and Sonali died due to an overdose.

Which means she wasn’t murdered and it was an accidental death caused due to drug consumption. This seems to be a far-fetched option and property and wealth is the only plausible motive as of now, because Sagwan was trying to convert her assets into his name.

The cops are tight-lipped and their mouths are zipped. Even unofficial police sources are not willing to comment, but only said that the team has either already zeroed in on the motive or are very close to it. Media reports said two diaries, gold and diamond jewellery and a passport were recovered from Sonali Phogat’s rented accommodation, which was shared by Phogat and Sagwan and she and her personal assistant Sudhir Sangwan had rented in their joint names, after presenting themselves as husband and wife, five months ago in Gurugram.

The Goa police Sunday searched House number 109, located in Tower Number 4 of Gurgaon Green Society in Sector 102 of Gurugram. The flat’s rent agreement was in the name of Sudhir Sangwan and Sonali was shown as his wife, police sources stated.

Before flying to Goa on August 21, Phogat and Sangwan travelled from her native place in a Tata Safari car owned by Sangwan.

The vehicle was also found parked in the society’s parking. The duo stayed together at this flat and sources say they were living together as husband and wife in the society.
