MUMBAI: According to medical journals, as well as expert opinion, enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) is a non‐invasive, non-surgical, assisted circulation therapy and enough scientific and medical evidence is available on record for its clinical application in the prevention and management of multiple comorbidities and problems in the elderly, both men and women including for angina, heart failure, cardiac disease, other heart problems, ischemic cerebrovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, anemia, chronic fatigue syndrome, sleep disorders, diabetes and its complications, blood pressure issues, ischemic eye diseases, sudden hearing loss and erectile dysfunction, as well as various psychological and psychiatric conditions.

When applying EECP to elderly patients, emphasis is on issues such as safety assessment, risk management and protocol individualization, as well as the monitoring of efficacy during and after treatment.

Active EECP which takes into account these factors above, as well as thorough counselling and medical supervision, besides using the latest software, equipment and technology is the latest in the medical realm, according to Dr Pranav Kabra.

Dr Kabra opines that Active EECP is very beneficial to the elderly as it helps resolve issues related to memory loss, heart disease, erectile dysfunction, blood pressure problems and many more.

Dr Kabra opines, vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) have an association with hemodynamic risk factors. While physical exercise and movement improves cardiac output, which in turn increases Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) and can improve cognitive function, patients with signs of dementia are not always able to exercise, due to cognitive or physical decline and other related ailments.

The Active Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) therapy is a non-invasive equipment used for patients with chronic angina and mild heart failure and helps increase cardiac output and Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF), says Dr Kabra.
