MUMBAI:  Mumbai’s Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh today said that the government may impose a partial lockdown or night curfew in the city.

Speaking to reporters outside the State Assembly, Mr. Shaikh said as the number of new cases continue to rise, it is possible that night clubs and tourist spaces like Gateway and beaches may soon have to shut down for a while.

He said local authorities have been empowered to take a decision on lockdown as and when necessary. Urging citizens to strictly follow COVID appropriate behaviour, Mr. Shaikh informed that people not wearing masks are being penalized in the city.

It may be recalled that Mumbai has been reporting over a thousand new cases since the last six days, with the number of active patients being above ten thousand.

This announcement comes a day after Mumbai’s neighbouring Thane Municipal Corporation announced a lockdown from 13th to 31st March in 16 hotspot areas of Thane city.

Considering the sudden spike in the number of cases, Thane’s Municipal Commissioner Vipin Sharma said the lockdown will be strictly implemented and requested people to adhere to all COVID related protocols.
