Goa: Matka gambling flourishing in Cortalim

PANAJI: Several activists from Cortalim on condition of anonymity have complained that matka gambling has started flourishing in Cortalim and that many influential and well-connected people are involved.

Without mentioning names, the activists allege that matka gambling activities in Cortalim have the support of some politicians and enjoys the support and patronage at the highest levels.

In the past there have been several raids against matka gambling operators in Cortalim, but not much has changed.

In July 2020, the Goa Police Crime Branch team had cracked down on matka activities in Cortalim and busted several operators after nabbing them red-handed with cash and marked chits and numbers.

However, over time the gambling business has once again flourished in the area with the support of cops and politicians alike and presently seems to be at an all-time high.

Cortalim is located about 16 kilometres to the south of the capital city Panaji, 17 kilometres to the north of the Goan commercial capital Margao and 8 kilometres from Mormugao.
