Install Speed Regulators On All Rented And Tourist Taxis and Cars: Shreha Dhargalkar
PANAJI: Activist Shreha Dhargalkar has demanded that the Transport department of the Goa government should make it compulsory to install speed regulators and speed trackers on all rented and tourist cars and taxis to prevent over speeding and reckless driving-related accidents.
Shreha’s comments came in the light of several road accidents in the last 2-3 weeks which have claimed the lives of nearly a dozen Goans.
“These rent-a-car vehicles driven by tourists – many a time under the influence of alcohol, as well as reckless tourist taxis are like Yamraj on the roads of Goa,” Shreha said, adding that she will move a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court if the Transport department does not take remedial steps on a war footing.
On Thursday, a 60-year-old man died in an accident after he was hit by a truck at Dabolim.
The victim, a resident of Dabolim, was fatally injured when he came under the wheels of the truck.
The driver of the truck involved in the accident was taken into custody by the police.
On the same day, a recklessly driven rent-a-car collided with a motorcycle on the old Mandovi bridge while overtaking, sending the rider flying in the air and causing him to fall into the Mandovi river.
The lifeless body of the victim Javed Sadekar from Aldona who worked with a casino was found in the Mandovi river on Saturday.
Eyewitnesses said the car heading towards Porvorim attempted a reckless overtake maneuver around 5.15 pm, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming motorcycle travelling towards Panaji.
Tests revealed that the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol and has been arrested by the Panaji police.
