MUMBAI: The Covid-19 situation in Mumbai is rearing its ugly head once again, with the number of infected patients going up.

In the western suburb of Kandivli alone, the civic body BMC has found five Delta Plus cases — four in Kandivli East and one in Kandivli West.

17 cases were detected in one building complex at Veena Geet Sangeet Gangotri Yamunotri building in Kandivli West, an upper-middle class locality, prompting the BMC to declare the society a containment zone.

The BMC has found five Delta Plus cases in the suburb, with residents claiming that there could be at least 10 more undetected Delta Plus cases lurking in Kandivli suburb alone.

In the past 24 hours, the number of Covid-19 fatalities in Mumbai rose to four from one.

According to the BMC’s report, three of the four deceased patients had comorbidities, three were senior citizens and one was in the age group of 45-60 years.

The state-wide figures also rose significantly on Wednesday, with 5,031 new cases and 216 deaths. On Tuesday, Maharashtra had registered 4,355 infections and 119 fatalities.

According to a Mid-day report, of the 17 cases, 10 patients recovered and seven are still recovering, two of whom are admitted in hospital.

The R South ward’s Assistant Municipal Commissioner Sandhya Nandedkar speaking to Mid-day said, “Slowly, cases are rising in the city and we are expecting the third wave next month as per experts. People should not take Covid-19 lightly. If there is a festival, avoid gatherings. We are working more on contact tracing now. The Mahavir Nagar-based society was declared as a containment zone after we found 17 Covid cases.”

“Separately, the R South ward also has five Delta Plus cases. Buildings where Delta Plus cases are found are sealed. We are providing them with daily essentials,” Nandedkar said.
