PANAJI: The Indian Meterological Department (IMD) in today’s forecast has said that Goa will witness heavy rainfall of 6.4 cms till September 29, which could prevail up to Sept 30th.

Several areas in Goa received moderate to heavy rainfall on Monday owing to a depression formed as remnants of Cyclone Gulab and a trough extending to it from the North Konkan region. The rains are expected to continue for the next 3 days.

“The Deep Depression over South Odisha-Chhattisgarh weakened into a depression, and has moved west-northwestwards and lay centered at 0830 hrs IST of 28th September 2021 over southwest Vidarbha and neighbouring areas. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and weaken into a well-marked Low Pressure Area during next 06 to 08 hours,” the IMD forecast stated.

The IMD has further stated that due to the west-north westwards movement of the system, heavy rainfall (rainfall > 6.4cm in 24 hrs) is very likely at one or two places over North and South Goa districts on 28th and 29th September. The rest of Goa could receive intermittent rains during these days till 30th September.

“Fishermen are advised not to venture out into sea on 28th & 29th,” the IMD warned due to strong winds and currents in the sea.

The total rainfall amount is likely around 100-150 mm with locally exceeding 200 mm.

Accordingly, IMD has placed Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa under a red alert for today.

“The system is likely to emerge into the northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat coast around 30th September and there is the likelihood for the system to further intensity over the northeast Arabian Sea during the subsequent 24 hours,” the IMD said in its report.
