Goa has the highest number of diabetes cases in India: ICMR
PANAJI: According to the ‘Metabolic non-communicable disease (NCD) health report of India: The Indian Council of Medical Research–India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB) national cross-sectional study’ published in the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal, “Goa” has the highest prevalence of diabetes in the country at 26.4%, as per the recent ICMR study, which was released recently.
The study also hinted that India has the most number of diabetics and pre-diabetics in the world, beating China to the first place.
A westernised lifestyle with a predominant non-veg diet coupled with a sedentary lifestyle, is a major contributor to the expontiatial rise in cases of diabetes in Goa, which has recorded the highest prevalence of the disorder in the country, experts said on Friday.
As per a study conducted by the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and other institutes, Goa has recorded the highest prevalence of diabetes in the country with 26.4 per cent of its population suffering from the disease, which is also responsible a huge proportion of heart attacks and cardiac disease in the coastal state, the report said.
