PANAJI: Former Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) mayor and Babush Monserrate close aide, Uday Madkaikar who joined the Congress along with his supporters on Saturday, will contest as an independent if denied a Congress ticket, sources close to Madkaikar said Sunday.

Madkaikar is hell bent on contesting in Panjim, his close friends told this reporter and irrespective of whether he gets a Congress ticket, he is going to contest, the source said, adding that Madkaikar has already started discretly campaigning in Panjim.

Former Corporation of the city of Panaji (CCP) mayor and Monserrate close aide, Uday Madkaikar joined the Congress along with his supporters on Saturday, a day after another former Babush aide Tony Rodrigues of Taleigao was inducted into the Congress party.

While the Congress party leadership has not said anything regarding their candidature, both Madkaikar and Rodrigues declared that they were keen on contesting elections in Panaji and Taleigao respectively.

While Uday Madkaikar was crystal clear and said he would contest in Panaji either way, Tony Rodrigues was a little bit more subtle and said he would like to contest if given a chance.

Monserrate’s right hand man and former councilor Rahul Lotlikar also joined the Congress with Madkaikar.

“Monserrate has betrayed people. Today if you look at Panaji, see the pathetic state it is in. Not one promise from his manifesto has been fulfilled,” said Madkaikar, while speaking to media persons in Panaji.
