PANAJI: Heavy to very heavy rainfall, at times very very heavy rainfall in isolated places, is expected in Goa and the Konkan region over the next 2-3 days starting from 4th. It will reduce by the fourth day or by the 8th or 9th September, but normal rain activity will continue during the days following 8th September, the weatherman predicted.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated with the likely formation of a Low Pressure Area over the North and adjoining Central Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours, monsoon activity is likely to get strengthened over South Konkan and Goa in the coming days.

“Very Heavy Rainfall (Rainfall exceeding 11.5 cm in 24 hours) is very likely at one or two places over the districts of Goa on 5th, 6th and 7th September. Likelihood of Heavy Rainfall (64.5 – 115.5 mm of rainfall in 24 hours) continues over North and South Goa districts for about a week starting from 4th September, with scattered and isolated spatial distributions,” the IMD said in its warning.

The IMD further said that intense spells for a short duration are very likely over North and South Goa districts during this period, causing flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.

“Winds of speed around 40 kmph are likely along with rainfall spells. With increased rainfall activity to continue, the areas vulnerable for landslide and flooding may be monitored closely,” the IMD added

The forecast further says that water levels in lakes, rivers and reservoirs may be monitored and necessary precautions be taken to avoid rivers breaching their banks and sudden overflow from reservoirs.

In view of the warnings issued by the IMD, Goa, regarding heavy rainfall in the State, including flash floods, over the next 48 hours, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has instructed the state administration to be on high alert and to immediately spring into action for taking precautionary measures and prepare for the oncoming rainfall.
