Goans prepare for a rainy week: Moderate to heavy rain expected over the weekend and for about one week

PANAJI: Both the districts of Goa – North Goa and South Goa are likely to experience a very wet weekend and the week ahead till almost the end of next week.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected at several places in both the districts of the coastal state according to the national weather department, while a private weather forecaster said, “widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely over Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep over the next 3-5 days.

The Panaji regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a NOWCAST warning for the 7th of September at 6.15pm.

The warning notes:

Light to moderate spells of rain is very likely to be accompanied with thunder/lightning and winds of speed around 40km/hr. At 1815 hrs, clouds are present over the talukas of Pernem, Sattari, etc and clouds are approaching the talukas of Mormugao, Salcette etc.

Another warning issued earlier said: “Light to Moderate thunderstorms are very likely to affect a few places over North & South Goa districts during next 3-4 hours”, while a warning three hours earlier read: Clouds are approaching from the east and more talukas are likely to experience thundershowers. A private weather agency has forecast that fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is very likely over East Madhya Pradesh on September 8, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and Marathwada from September 8-11, Odisha, Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra from September 7-11, Gujarat Region on September 9, 10 and 11, southwest Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra and Kutch on September 10 and 11, Andaman & Nicobar Islands on September 7 and 8, and over Gangetic West Bengal on September 9-11.

Additionally, isolated very heavy rainfall has also been forecast over Odisha, Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra from September 8-10, Chhattisgarh on September 8-9, Marathwada and Vidarbha on September 9, and over Gujarat on September 10.
