Utpal Parrikar unlikely to get Panjim BJP ticket, claim senior party sources

NEW DELHI: While late Goa CM Manohar Parrikar’s son Utpal Parrikar has made it clear that he would like to contest from Panjim, senior BJP sources both in Goa and New Delhi said that Utpal is very unlikely to get the ticket as he is completely divorced from the ground realities of electoral politics in Panjim and the organizational setup of the party.

According to media reports, Parrikar said he has informed the party of his intention to contest and hopes the party will consider his candidature.

Besides Utpal Parrikar, the BJP is worried about Babush Monserrate’s moves. There are loud rumors in Panjim that Babush is planning something new and different for Panjim, Taleigao, St Cruz and St Andre – constituencies where he has a good network. Babush could also be eyeing the Cumbharjua seat as well.

Already, Babush’s Man Friday and Taleigao Sarpanch, Agnelo Da Cunha has started working in St Cruz and currently is the strongest contender among the lot. There are 5 aspirant candidates from the Congress and one from the Aam Aadmi Party, but Da Cunha holds the key.

In view of these circumstances, the BJP simply cannot afford to antagonize Babush, which means at least Panjim and Taleigao will fall in Babush’s lap.
