MUMBAI: A Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) informer Waseem Khan (name changed) from Malwani, near Malad West in suburban Mumbai, has alleged that NCB officials promised cash awards and name and fame to informers and khabris who gave the agency tips on film personalities, models and even journalists and media persons consuming or doing drugs.

“I am trying to get the NCB to carry out raids in Malwani and Charkop, because there are several peddlers operating in the area. There are many drug addicts in Malwani and peddlers openly sell drugs.  The situation becomes worse during night time and drug addicts can be seen doing lines, smoking charas and ganja in dark, open spaces and even on roadsides,” Khan claimed.

According to him, “the peddlers have local gangs and if anyone tries to accost them, they are immediately attacked with sharp, crude weapons like the ustraa (barber’s razor) or choppers. But the NCB is not interested in raiding these places and hideouts. On the other hand, those informers who give tips on film personalities, models, actors and even journalists, are given handsome rewards. For example, K P Gosavi and Manish Bhanushali who tipped off the NCB about the Aryan Khan drugs case, could have got nearly Rs one lakh or more in cash as a ‘reward’. Other tippers or informers are promised Rs 50,000/- to Rs 75,000/- for information on celebrities and models or parties frequented by the rich and famous, but for ordinary cases, the NCB is not even interested in looking at them. All informers were told only to concentrate on celebs or film industry people and to leave the local drug addicts to the local police to handle,” Waseem Khan told this reporter.
