Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco nominated by IFACC and CPIE India for efforts towards sustainable organic agriculture
PANAJI: In a major achievement and a feather in their cap for all the farmers of the Curtorim constituency, the International Forum for Action on Climate Change (IFACC) and the Center for Promoting Indian Economy (CPIE India) has nominated Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco for an international award in recognition of his efforts towards promoting sustainable organic agriculture in the biodiversity hot spot in South Goa.
Also known as the granary of Salcette, Curtorim has achieved national recognition for bringing in nearly 96 percent of its farmlands under cultivation in a little over a decade.
“By next year, monsoon of 2022, 100 percent of all farmland in Curtorim will be under the plough, with the focus on non-intrusive and self-sustaining organic agriculture,” Reginaldo has promised.
From just 15 percent of land under cultivation to 96 percent in a span of 12 to 15 years, is indeed an achievement to be recognized said New Delhi-based Stella Richmond spokesperson of the International Forum for Action on Climate Change, who announced Lourenco’s nomination.
In addition to organic agriculture, Curtorim has seen a meteoric rise in non-destructive mechanised farming over the last decade. From 50,000 square meters to 4 lakh square meters this season under mechanised cultivation, Lourenco and his coworkers along with other social organizations have been leading from the front in Curtorim.
Lourenco has been providing farmers of Curtorim with free mechanised farming equipment and services like harvesting machines and tractors over the last several years.
Efforts to launch other agro-economic activity like crab culture and shrimp and prawn farming is also underway in Curtorim under Lourenco’s watch, which will take off in the coming year.
