ALERT: Extremely heavy rains expected in Goa, flash floods predicted, schools closed on July 6
PANAJI: Several disaster warning agencies including the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have issued a warning of a low to moderate flash flood in parts of the country, including Goa, Konkan, Kerala, parts of Karnataka and coastal Maharashtra.
Several parts of Goa are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain on 6th July and moderate to heavy rainfall during the rest of the weekend, the weatherman said.
“Surface runoff or inundation may occur at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas,” the alert read.
Among the areas of concern (AoC) were few watersheds and neighbourhoods of coastal Karnataka, Kerala and the Konkan region, a Times of India report, quoting the IMD said.
The IMD has even issued a red alert for July 5 and an orange alert for July 6 for Goa and the same applies to the Konkan and parts of Maharashtra. While Mumbai has an yellow-orange alert for 6th July, other parts of coastal Maharashtra and the Konkan region are on red alert.
The weather department issued an orange alert for Goa and Kerala on 6th July Thursday. The IMD said Goa is expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall on Thursday, which could be very heavy in some areas and also warned of possible flash floods in the state.
The Directorate of Education in Goa declared a holiday for school students on Thursday in view of incessant rain and an alert issued by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The education administration in Kerala has also made a similar decision to keep schools closed in several districts on Thursday.
