MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are likely to be held only after the monsoon season is over and possibly only after Diwali 2023.

According to media reports, elections to the 24 municipal corporations in Maharashtra including the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections will be further postponed and are not likely to be held before monsoon, sources claimed.

There are very slim chances of holding the BMC elections before the monsoons as the matters regarding the holding of elections as well as the allocation of the party symbol to the two different Shiv Sena factions is still pending before the Election Commission as well as the Supreme court of India.

Either party which does not get a verdict in its favor will go in appeal, which means the matter is likely to prolong for at least another 6 to 8 months.

In Mumbai, last year, the MVA government, which was in power reorganized the wards of the BMC and increased the number of wards from 227 to 236.

After the government fell and the new Shinde-BJP alliance took over, the decision of the MVA government was reversed and the number of wards was restored back to 227.

Due to this decision, the already stalled elections of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation were delayed further. The Eknath Shinde faction is claiming the bow and arrow party symbol and the matter is pending before the Election Commission of India.

Similarly, which faction is the real Shiv Sena – the breakaway section with a clear majority of lawmakers or the party structure and organisation under Uddhav Thackeray – this matter is pending before the Supreme Court and no major elections can be held unless this matter is sorted out.
