Met dept issues Heat Wave alert for Mumbai, Mira-Bhyandar, Thane, Palghar and Raigad for next 4 days
MUMBAI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Monday issued a heat wave alert for several regions including Mumbai (city and suburbs), Mira-Bhayandar, Thane, Thane rural areas, Palghar, Raigad and other parts of the Konkan region for the next 3-4 days, as day-time peak temperatures are expected to continue in the range of 38 to 39 degrees Celsius.
Even Goa experienced abnormally high temperatures, exceeding 4 to 5 degrees above normal during this time of the year.
Heat wave-like conditions were witnessed in parts of Mumbai since Saturday, and the financial capital of the country recorded temperatures touching almost 39 degrees on Sunday.
The same was also recorded on Monday, the IMD said.
The recorded temperature is around 5.5 to 6 degrees above normal, the Met said.
The maximum temperature in the city began shooting up from last week, with the suburban Santacruz Observatory recording a maximum temperature of 37.1 degrees on March 3.
On Sunday, the maximum temperature of 38.9 degrees was recorded at Santacruz, the highest daytime temperature for the year so far.
Residents complained about soaring temperatures in the city, venting their ire on social media. One Twitter user wrote, “I am in sahara desert” talking about the rise in temperature.
The maximum temperature for next the three days in Mumbai will hover around 37-38 degree Celsius, with a possibility of the mercury touching 39 degrees again, while Thane and interior parts could experience maximum temperatures of 40-43 degree Celsius.
The weatherman claimed the reason for the high temperatures was a delay in the sea breeze which blows into the city and suburbs and the beginning of the peak summer season.
