Goa monsoon update: Several parts of Goa could experience flooding or water-logging as heavy showers expected next week
PANAJI: While most parts of the coastal state have been experiencing pre-monsoon showers over the last 3-4 days, the next week, after the 9th or 10th of this month, could see heavy rains in most parts of Goa. The next two days, 6 and 7 of June may be dry in most parts of the state. A developing cyclonic circulation in the Arabian sea is likely to affect the monsoon pattern in Goa and the exact trend will be known within 24 to 48 hours as the direction of the system becomes apparent.
Environmentalists have warned of flooding and water-logging in several parts of Goa, including the capital city of Panaji as some showers could be heavy to very heavy, a private weather forecaster said.
A Times of India report on June 1st had said that though the monsoon is likely to arrive in Kerala on June 4, the conditions for pre-monsoon rainfall in Goa did not appear to be favourable due to lack of any effective system.
It also said that no relief was expected from the heat during the next three to four days (2nd to 5th June) as the Panaji weather centre had forecast dry weather. “There is no system that will yield rain for the next three days, but there is a possibility of light showers or thunderstorms on Sunday,” the report quoted Rajasree V P M, scientist at IMD-Panaji as saying.
However, pre-monsoon showers have made their presence felt in most parts of Goa and it is likely to rain heavily next week, according to other weather sources.
“Some parts of Goa will receive heavy to very heavy rains, leading to water-logging and even flooding in certain areas,” a private weather portal has claimed.
