MADGAON: Margao MLA Digambar Kamat could join the Bharatiya Janta Party as early as next week, sources in the know claimed.

Kamat recently visited Delhi and is said to have met several senior BJP leaders in the national capital. While he has not spoken about the purpose of his Delhi visit, sources said he may be pitching for a Ministry at the Centre or some similar Union Ministry level posting with the Central Govt. Kamat was not available for comment. However, in the past he had flatly denied any rumours of his leaving the Congress and but did say he was “retired hurt” after Congress leaders accused him of trying to engineer a defection of Congress MLAs in the coastal state.

Meanwhile, according to the Times of India, the President of BJP’s Margao mandal, Rupesh Mahatme, said that speculations about Kamat joining the BJP were merely speculations, and these “rumours” were spread by Kamat’s own workers.

“Kamat doesn’t dare to join BJP. No leader from Goa, not even from Margao, has any knowledge about Digambar joining BJP,” Mahatme told TOI.

In another interview with another news outlet, Mahatme dared Kamat to resign and contest polls again from Margao if he wanted to join the BJP.

Mahatme also did not specify if the Margao BJP unit would welcome Kamat if he joined the party. “If he does join BJP, we will declare our stand at that time,” Mahatme was quoted by TOI.

In another development, four councillors of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) are likely to join the BJP soon. Mahatme confirmed that the four councillors from the Kamat camp are joining the BJP and that they (BJP) would be in a majority in the MMC.

Kamat while speaking to The Goan had denied that MMC councillors affiliated to his group were joining the BJP.

“Our team (jointly floated by Kamat and the Goa Forward Party) is intact and the BJP is only spreading rumours,” Kamat was quoted as saying.
