NEW DELHI: In a Goa-related political development, sources at the Delhi BJP HQ as well as in the Central government claimed that senior Congress-turned BJP MLA from Margao in South Goa and former Goa CM, Digambar Kamat – who is in constant and daily touch with national BJP leaders in the capital – may be possibly anointed as the future CM of Goa. “Expect a big shuffle in Goa in the months to come,” claimed a reliable source at the BJP headquarters, adding that the present Goa CM could be asked to step down and given other responsibilities and the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat could replace him. After the drug-related death of politician Sonali Phogat at a hotel in Anjuna in North Goa and the arrest of some businessmen and hoteliers in drug-related matters by the Hyderabad police, New Delhi has reportedly deputed a Gujarat-cadre senior officer to Goa in an official capacity to check and keep an eye on the day to day functioning of the state administration and report back to the Union Home Ministry.

Not too long ago, State BJP General Secretary (Organisation) Satish Dhond was shunted out to Asansol in West Bengal. Dhond had his fingers deep in the administration pie and his transfer was seen as an attempt to keep the flock in Goa on a leash.

Dhond was considered close to the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and he would have stalled the move by Digambar Kamat to join the BJP, with an eye ultimately on the CM’s chair. While not much is known about this exercise, there is a strong possibility that Kamat may be given the top post in the State as the BJP leadership in New Delhi is considering a revamp, both in the State organisation as well as the administration in the coastal state. A decision on this is likely to be taken before the Assembly polls in several states including Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka, keeping in mind the developments in Maharashtra and the Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

When we called Digambar Kamat for his views and comments on the matter, he said he was sleeping and hence would not be able to speak to us. We will seek and report Kamat’s views on this subject in another story.
